Records & Refuse

Photography by Liz Linder

Of Records and Refuse, a collection of photographs both of musicians and product placement images, photographer Liz Linder explains, "In a day when advertising reaches into every environment, I'm curious about the connection between trash and advertising – it's a different sort of product placement." The images, including crinkled Budweiser beer cans strewn across the beach, as well as portraits of The Dresden Dolls, and other Boston favorite musicians, will be the first visual art exhibition at the new loft gallery in the South End.

Linder is interested "in the relationship between branding and the proliferation of trash. These days it seems like the overabundance of cheap packaging for consumables has created a product that outlives its use. The end result," she continues, "is trash and inadvertent branding everywhere – or is it?"

Of her long-time work shooting musicians and live performances Linder states, "I tend to gravitate toward people and moments that have a balance of raw and quirky elements. I am really drawn to action and love capturing moments. I get more inspiration from photographing music than from two-dimensional work because it exists in time."

Liz Linder's photography has been published in Rolling Stone, The New York Times, People Magazine, Boston Magazine, Spin, Wired, Jazz Times, Guitar World, and many other publications. Corporate/institutional clients include Da Capo Press, Sugar Hill Records, John Hancock, EMC, Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Harvard University, MIT, and Berklee College of Music. She has been interviewed on NPR's On Point, and ABC's World News Tonight. Her personal work is exhibited and collected throughout the United States and Europe. Ms. Linder studied at The Museum School at the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) and Haverford College in Pennsylvania. She resides in Brookline.
