[Boston, MA] SPACE 242 proudly announces its tenth exhibition of 2008, SASQUATCH VS THE ZOMBIES: WAR IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. The one-man exhibition, one of two on view October 31 through November 21, features new original artwork by Mordicai Sulk. The opening reception, Friday, October 31, runs from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Boston’s South End, 242 E. Berkeley Street, 2nd floor (Between Albany Street and Harrison Avenue), Boston. The artist will be present and artwork on view is also for sale. RSVP required for attendance at ww.space242.com.

An editorial illustrator, animator, and video game designer, Sulk’s newest body of work takes us to colonial times, after the dust settled, where Sasquatch battle the Zombies – the paintings depict heroes at famous battle scenes. “Once the human populace had either been converted to zombie form, or had simply been eaten, the hunger still lingered,” says Sulk. “Soon the hunger became too much, and the Zombie populace was forced to look to other forms of nutrients…First it was the apes, then came the bear, and on down the evolutionary chain. By jumping species, the Zombies soon evolved into somewhat different forms themselves. In the Pacific Northwest, a horde of Zombies headed north in search of food. It was then that a new form of nutrition was discovered. However, this “new form” wouldn’t be taken without a fight.”

Sulk’s work has been primarily with pen and ink, however his new muse is gouache. He cites influences including MAD Magazine, horror and sci-fi comics from the 1970s, Golden Books from the 1950s, stop-motion animation, and 1980s slasher films. “It’s a beautifully gritty world, one that fills me with both disgust and wonder,” says Sulk, “one that I try to get down on paper.”

Sulk earned the AltWeekly Award (2007) by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies for his illustrations in the Portland Phoenix, as well as two awards from the New England Press Association. He has been recognized by The Society of Publication Designers, and his work was featured in American Illustration 24. His clients include The New Yorker, Entertainment Weekly, Details, Pop Smear, New York Press, The New York Times, The Village Voice, The Boston Phoenix, San Francisco Weekly, Simon & Schuster, and others.

Mr. Sulk, a graduate of Parsons School of Design, teaches illustration at Maine College of Art, is a founding member of The Church of Mikes, and lives in Portland, Maine.
