New Illustrations, Paintings, & Mixed Media

Private Opening Reception Friday, May 27, 6-8pm

SPACE 242 proudly announces its fifth exhibition of 2008, FLORA & FAUNA, featuring illustrations, paintings, and mixed media by Joe Keinberger and Sarah Coyne. The opening reception, Friday, May 30, runs from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Boston’s South End, 242 E. Berkeley Street, 2nd floor (Between Albany Street and Harrison Avenue), Boston. The artists will be present and artwork on view is also for sale.

Joe Keinberger creates paintings, illustrations, sculpture, comic strips, and apparel design. According to him, the work sometimes reeks of “frightening images of the impending apocalypse.” His characters include “obsessive compulsive phantoms, misguided and disillusioned anthropomorphic root vegetables, and woodland creatures living as self-important, self-made saints. They are a “sad menagerie of booze-addles, overburdened, melancholy flora and fauna, on a solemn and cheerful death march into obscurity.”

His work has been exhibited in New York, San Francisco, throughout the Boston area and in publications, record albums, rock posters and websites. He cites influences including Ralph Steadman, Camille Rose Garcia, Marcel Dzama, Egon Schiele, and Chris Mars. Originally from Hingham, MA, Keinberger studied at Massachusetts College of Art, and resides in Medford/Somerville.

Sarah Coyne’s work showcases her love of the natural world in a sweet blend of bright colors and simple imagery on acrylics on wood, tiny gouache studies, 3-D creations, and mixed media pieces. Subjects include the outdoors, animals, plants, and birds. She cites influences including Eric Carle, Edward Gorey, Charlie Harper, Eleanor Grosch, John J. Audubon, Alexander Calder, and Beatrix Potter. Originally from New Hampshire, Ms. Coyne earned a degree in illustration at Massachusetts College of Art and resides in Somerville.

Boston Underground Film Festival (BUFF) will also show film shorts in the mini theatre at the opening reception.

FLORA & FAUNA is sponsored in part by The Weekly Dig, ArtScope Magazine, The GoodLife, Perfect Vodka, and Samuel Adams.

Additional viewing hours are Tuesday, June 17, 6:30-8pm.
